Screen vs UV Printing: Who Will Win the Market Battle?

por WongJim 19 May 2025 0 comentarios

In the field of industrial printing, traditional screen printing and UV printing are often discussed together. Each process has a mature application system, but also has its own limitations.

For factories, understanding their differences can make more prudent choices in production strategies. This article will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of UV printing and silk screen printing from six dimensions:

1. Process Flow

Screen printing requires multiple preparation steps such as plate making, plate adjustment, plate exposure, and plate washing. Once the pattern changes or the order becomes small batches or diversified, the cost will rise and delivery will slow down.

UV printing is a digital output, which directly uses a computer to control the image file, and it is printed immediately without any plate making process. For scenes with fast order pace and frequent pattern changes, UV printing is more efficient.

However, when it comes to large-volume orders with fixed patterns, screen printing still has advantages in terms of efficiency and consumables control.

2. Cost Structure

Screen printing has more cost advantages in large-volume repetitive orders;

UV is more economical and flexible for short and diverse orders.

3. Printing Effect

Screen printing is known for its "thick color blocks and stable colors", which is suitable for applications that require color density, such as label printing, signage, etc. However, screen printing is inherently limited in its ability to process images with complex details, delicate patterns, and gradual transitions.

UV printing supports high-precision output, gradient control, multi-layer printing, white ink priming, varnish overlay and other processes. It can achieve visual effects that silk screen printing cannot achieve, and performs better in scenarios such as advertising decoration, high-end packaging, and personalized customization.

4. Material Adaptability

Screen printing is suitable for most flat materials, but if it encounters curved, special-shaped or soft materials, additional processes are required and the adaptation cost is high.

UV printing with soft ink or primer can achieve high adhesion printing on glass, wood, plastic, leather, metal and other materials. Especially in multi-material mixed production lines, the flexibility advantage of UV is more obvious.

5. Environmental Protection and Compliance

Screen printing is still mainly based on solvent-based inks, which have VOC volatilization problems; there may be risks in areas with strict environmental protection reviews or in export companies.

UV ink is a light-curing ink, which has no solvent volatilization, is basically odorless, and complies with mainstream environmental certification requirements such as ROHS and REACH. It is more suitable for factory environments that focus on safety, environmental protection and factory inspection standards.

6. Equipment Investment and Maintenance

The investment in screen printing equipment is low, but it is highly dependent on labor and experience;

UV requires a large initial investment, but has a low operating threshold and strong automation, making it suitable for new teams or companies that prioritize efficiency.

Summary

Screen printing still has advantages, especially in large-volume and large-color block orders, it still has cost advantages; but in personalized, customized, short-delivery, small-batch and environmentally friendly orders, UV printing is undoubtedly the mainstream technology with greater growth potential.
