Encoder Strip and H9730 Sensor Checks Before You Replace a Printhead

Those searches point to a practical service question: is the printer losing position feedback, or is the printhead actually the problem?

When a wide-format inkjet printer starts showing banding, ghosting, color-to-color offset, or carriage-direction defects, the printhead often gets blamed first. That can be an expensive shortcut. A dirty encoder strip, weak optical sensor, loose carriage cable, or unstable controller signal can create defects that look like nozzle failure but do not come from the nozzles.

Read the defect before changing parts

A printhead problem usually follows nozzle behavior: missing channels, deflected jets, poor recovery after cleaning, or color-specific dropout. Encoder trouble usually follows motion. If the defect repeats by carriage position, appears after fast bidirectional passes, or shifts after the carriage rail is cleaned or bumped, the position system deserves attention.

The existing encoder strip and decoder guide is a useful starting point because it explains how the strip and sensor work together. The strip gives the carriage a reference; the sensor reads that reference; the controller turns it into position data.

Inspect the strip before touching the head

The phrase encoder strip in printer is basic, but it is exactly where many repairs should begin. Look for ink mist, adhesive residue, fingerprints, scratches, bends, and loose mounting tension. Use the cleaner recommended for the machine and a lint-free wipe. Do not scrape the strip, and do not leave fibers on the printed timing marks.

After cleaning, run a small bidirectional alignment pattern and a simple color-block test. If the defect changes immediately after the strip is cleaned, that result is evidence. It does not automatically clear the printhead, but it tells you the carriage feedback system was part of the problem.

Use the H9730 sensor check when cleaning does not solve it

The h9730 encoder sensor signal points to the H9730-1715 encoder sensor. A sensor can fail electrically, sit out of alignment, become contaminated, or lose reliable reading when a carriage cable is strained. Before replacement, record the current installation position and inspect the connector, cable routing, mounting screws, and sensor window.

If the machine has been serviced recently, also check whether the strip height, sensor gap, and carriage cover were returned to the correct positions. A good part installed at the wrong angle can still create a bad signal.

Match Mimaki parts with the controller path

  • Clean and inspect: check the encoder strip for mist, scratches, bends, residue, and loose tension before replacing electronics.
  • Check the sensor: inspect the H9730 sensor window, gap, bracket, screws, connector, and cable routing.
  • Review related parts: include Mimaki carriage parts, boards, belts, rails, and printhead-controller wiring when defects change with carriage movement.
  • Prove the repair: run alignment, nozzle, and production-material tests after each change instead of changing several parts at once.

A printhead replacement should be the result of evidence, not the first move. When the search data is pointing at encoder strips and sensors, the smarter repair path is to confirm carriage position feedback before spending money on the head.
